One of my goals this year is to get more into woodworking.
I’ve already tackled simple peg rails, a wood bench, and even some spice drawer inserts.
Today, I’m thrilled to share my latest woodworking project with you – a DIY wood pedestal!
These farmhouse-style pedestals are all the rage right now, and with good reason.
Not only are they charming and versatile, but they’re also incredibly easy to make.
Why a Wood Pedestal?

A wood pedestal is a perfect addition to any home.
You can use it to hold soaps in the bathroom, cooking oils and salts in the kitchen, or even as a decorative element on your bookshelves.
While you can easily buy them, there’s something special about creating your own. Plus, it’s much cheaper!
Materials You’ll Need
For this project, you only need two inexpensive pieces of wood:
- 2×4 pine wood
- 2×6 pine wood
You’ll also need a few tools and supplies:
- Table saw or circular saw
- Wood glue (optional if not using screws)
- Wood screws (2 or 2.5 inches)
- Orbital sander or sandpaper
- Drill
- Drill bit and screwdriver bit
- Wood stain of your choice (I used Early American)
- Polyurethane
- Tape measure
Step-by-Step Instructions
Just follow these 5 steps:
Step 1: Measure Your Pedestal
First, decide on the size of your pedestal.
I recommend bringing the wood into your kitchen or bathroom and placing the items you plan to store on it to get a feel for the right size.
My kitchen pedestal measures 12 inches long, and my bathroom pedestal is 9 inches long.
Each pedestal also has two feet, each 1.5 inches wide.
Using 2×4 and 2×6 lumber, each piece is about 1.5 inches thick.

Step 2: Cut Wood to Size
Now that you have your measurements, it’s time to cut your wood.

Using a table saw, cut a 12-inch and a 9-inch piece from the 2×6.
Then, cut four 1.5-inch wide pieces from the 2×4 to use as feet for your pedestals.

Step 3: Sand Your Wood Pieces
Sanding is essential to ensure your wood pieces are smooth and ready for staining.
An orbital sander can create rounded edges, giving the wood an aged, vintage look.
This technique helps to make cheap pine wood look more interesting and less like it came straight from the hardware store.

You can also use a wire brush attachment on your drill for a distressed look.

Step 4: Attach Feet to the Pedestal Top
Before attaching the feet, mark where you want them to go on the pedestal. Ideally, they should be evenly spaced under the top piece.
I measured about 1 inch from the top and bottom and 1.5 inches in from each side.
You can attach the feet in three ways:
- Wood Glue: Apply wood glue to both the pedestal and the feet, rub them together to bond, and use clamps for a tight fit.
- Screws: For a more secure attachment, use screws. First, create a shallow hole with a 1/2 inch drill bit so the screw heads will sit recessed. Then, use a screwdriver bit to screw the wood screws into the holes. I used one screw per foot, totaling four screws.
- Combo Method: Combine both wood glue and screws for extra strength.

Step 5: Stain Your Wood Pedestal
Now it’s time to stain your pedestal.

I recommend using a stain like Early American for a warm, inviting look.

You can apply the stain with a paper towel, rag, or foam brush.
Make sure to wear gloves to avoid getting stain on your hands.
Once the stain is dry, apply a thin layer of polyurethane to protect the wood.
